Dear listener and reader, it has been a while since we encountered any high-quality electronic instrumental releases. If you, like me, have been missing the rich sound of somber instrumentals mixed with a cybernetic neon haze and a sense of alarm, then I want to tell you about the release "Lagerstätte" by Cochrane. Working in the genre of dark electronics, Cochrane creates entire worlds in his releases. The new album "Lagerstätte" features four tracks with extended timings, allowing you to enjoy the sound and story without interruption. Each track in the release is rich with meaning, electronic pad swells, various instruments, and quite rich textures. I appreciate that Cochrane is forging his own path, releasing music that stimulates the mind, creates images and visions. It's a very subtle move because, in fact, Cochrane does not reveal the conceptual secrets of his release. It is just him, "Lagerstätte," and the listener. When there are no clues and nothing to rely on, the mind paints its own pictures, and this endows the release with unique meanings each time after listening. I recommend you do just that - allow yourself to feel Cochrane’s music. Let it penetrate your consciousness and reveal its secrets to you.
I am sure that you will be able to feel it yourself, with every cell of your body from Cochrane's perfect sound. Every rhythm, every instrument, every beat of percussion is in its place, and this is the music you want to listen to. Have you already pulled out your best headphones so as not to miss a single beat and sound in “Lagerstätte”? Then quickly play “The Roiling Cells”, and a great adventure awaits us! I like the subtle ticking of clocks and the flow of keys, and only a light synth whisper creates a sense of the beginning of something grand and cosmic. I can't stop imagining a quite digital world, and the low basses. Deep beat and high female vocals towards the middle of the track paint a dystopian picture. Perhaps you feel differently? But the hissing, as if interference, the increasing rhythm and the swells of instruments and pads all create a sense of a world full of life. Very cinematic. Over 8 minutes, textures change, and the sound lives as if it were a source, constantly changing. This creates a sense of real pleasure from listening. I can’t help but notice the sound quality. Even when guitars are introduced into the sound, it looks so natural and smooth that it immediately sparks genuine interest in what awaits us next.
The playful title "The Cat, the Muse" and the track's slow development add a sense of confrontation to the narrative. Light, airy trills that dissolve into digital noise blend with deep rhythms and sharp pads. Meanwhile, keys and guitars seem to replace the vocals on the track. I really like "The Cat, the Muse". It's quite intimate and cozy, and the voluminous atmosphere of the sound creates a feeling of diving underwater for me. As we move further with the melody, it transforms, becoming lighter and brighter, only to plunge back into the atmosphere of a cybernetic future towards the end. You know, it's a great track to just close your eyes and relax, really. Very stylish, well-produced, and effortless. However, in the next track "Future Name," the atmosphere becomes noticeably tense. A clear rhythm, an engaging motif blends with the gentleness of water pads. This track fully reveals the complexity of Cochrane’s sound. If Cochrane were to employ jazz harmonies and improvisation, I wouldn't be surprised, because it's quite expected in such complex and emotional music.
The perfect fusion of tonalities, rhythms, and harmonies, especially in the guitars, fills me with a sense of exhilaration. I absolutely love it! "Future Name" is definitely my favorite, particularly with the sense of escalating tension towards the end. I didn’t realize when my pulse quickened—I got a bit lost, which is indeed thrilling! Especially the relaxing ending, high, light, and pure. The final track "Dad Song" concludes on a note of unease. The cosmic pads become extremely emotional, the minor tones cut deep, and new harmonies intensify the atmospheric tension.
What do you feel when you listen to this track? I must confess, it would be unsettling for me to close my eyes. I am too impressed. And it is exactly this meticulous, cinematic work with the atmosphere that distinguishes this release. True art, I adore it! I recommend that you listen to "Lagerstätte" always - leave it on in the background while you’re busy; play it through headphones, enjoying a day off; turn it on at a comfortable volume while walking through a park. Reflect while listening to Cochrane’s music. Imagine stories and fantasize. Let this be your favorite escape!
P.S. Hey Cochrane! Thank you for creating such interesting, poetic, and cool music. I really like your style, you know. Each track not only sounds perfect but also creates a tangible atmosphere, almost as if you could touch it. This is a very cool release that carries even more than one might imagine or assume, right? And how much time and work in the studio does it take to achieve such a comfortable sound for each of the instruments? Oh… I will definitely be showing the release to everyone, because your sound is unique and truly powerful! Perfect!
